Howard Street Cemetery.

The legend of Giles Corey.

Salem Ghosts retells a legend that Corey’s spirit appears around local disasters, including the Great Salem Fire of 1914. That is folklore, not a verified haunting. The cemetery opened in 1801; its traditional association with Corey reaches back to his death in 1692.

Howard Street, beside the former Salem Jail

North of the downtown core and northwest of the Salem Witch Museum and Common.

Established in 1801 beside the old Salem Jail, Howard Street Cemetery preserves another chapter of the city’s history, distinct from the earlier witch-trial era.

This is a burial ground. Respect mourners and other visitors, leave memorials untouched and check cemetery access and photography arrangements with the city before planning a session.

Trees and old grave markers give these environmental portraits their setting. The gallery includes warm autumn light and a quieter winter scene.
